Transitioning out of service-learning

Transitioning out of service-learning

The short-term nature of service-learning experiences may inadvertently cause strain for community partners and their clients.  Students should discuss strategies for wrapping up with their site supervisor and the instructor. Often this means students will prepare their “client” in advance by talking about when the semester will end and what it means for the relationship. The student could accentuate this moment with a small memento, note, photograph, etc.

Many students wish to maintain contact after the semester ends, and they may wonder if that’s allowable.  All students benefit from talking with site supervisor about transitioning out or continuing.
